Lesson Plan – General Biology
Unit: Genetics
Topic: Monohybrid cross/Punnett squares
Objectives: Students will be able to define “monohybrid cross” and use a Punnett square to predict the outcome of such a cross.
Lesson/Activity:
1.) Define/discuss monohybrid crosses – students take notes.
2.) Discuss common/observable inherited traits with students to illustrate inheritance patterns.
3.) In pairs, students discuss their respective traits and make predictions on what would happen if they were to produce an offspring, i.e. – which trait would their offspring inherit and what would the ratios be?
4.) After hearing student predictions, teacher discusses how to predict outcomes of monohybrid crosses using punnett squares.
5.) In pairs, students do practice punnett square problems and then share their predictions with the class. (Assessment)
